Nebraska Appleseed Statement on Governor’s veto of LB 947

Needless veto wastes skills, talent of thousands of hard-working young Nebraskans

LINCOLN — Today, Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Rebecca Gould issued the following statement on Governor Ricketts’ veto of LB 947.

“The Governor’s decision to veto LB 947 is disappointing and short-sighted because it lets the skills and talents of thousands of hard-working, young Nebraskans go to waste,” Gould said. “Nebraska’s communities and economy have so much to gain from these young people who grew up and went to school in our state and are authorized to work here. At a time when many talented young employees are moving away from Nebraska, it makes no sense for the Governor to tell young people who want to grow their careers here that he doesn’t want them to stay.

“The young people who could achieve professional licenses under LB 947 grew up in our communities and attended our public schools. Our communities have made substantial investments in young people who want to give back. A veto of LB 947 simply prevents Nebraska from benefitting fully from their skills and talents. We call on the Legislature to stand with these young Nebraskans and vote to override the Governor’s veto.”
