Nebraska Appleseed Statement on voters passing Initiative 427
Nebraskans chose a healthier future for our hard-working people by expanding Medicaid
LINCOLN — Tonight, Nebraska voters passed Initiative 427 to expand Medicaid and allow 90,000 people to finally get access to affordable health coverage.
Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Rebecca Gould issued the following statement in response to the vote:
“Tonight, Nebraskans voted for a healthier future for our friends, neighbors, and family members who have gone too long without the life-saving health care everyone needs. We are grateful to everyone who supported this effort, talked about its importance to their fellow Nebraskans, and cast a vote for Initiative 427. Because of you, lives will be saved and families have more hope without facing the terrible choice between physical suffering and financial collapse.”
“While tonight is cause for celebration, soon begins the work of making sure the will of the voters is faithfully executed by our leaders. We encourage the Department of Health and Human Services to quickly develop a strategy to integrate these newly insured Nebraskans into our health care system, and the Legislature to implement the program without taking away resources from other essential responsibilities like education, child welfare, or public services that help hard-working Nebraskans meet their other basic needs.”
