Nebraska Appleseed Statement on Supreme Court decision on Trump v. Hawaii
High court decision allows legalized discrimination that ignores American values
LINCOLN — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in its decision in Trump v. Hawaii, upholding the Trump Administration’s ban on immigrants and refugees from predominantly Muslim nations.
Nebraska Appleseed Federal Policy Director Omaid Zabih issued this statement in response:
“The White House discrimination against people based on their religious faith is a betrayal of America’s fundamental values and needlessly divides many of our communities,” Zabih said. “The travel ban is an affront to our long-standing tradition of welcoming new neighbors into safe homes, and greatly endangers people fleeing humanitarian crises in Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Somalia.
“Nebraskans across the state have stood with our immigrant and refugee neighbors for years, solidifying community support for our neighbors. This decision pushes us further from Nebraska’s values and our national ideals of dignity, fairness, respect, and justice. Implementing this ban is a grave mistake that will be a black mark on our country’s history.”
