When school meals are free, more kids get the nutrition they need to succeed in class.
✅ LB966, introduced by Sen. Michaela Cavanaugh, would allow Nebraska kids who qualify for reduced-price school meals to get those meals for free. This bill would help around 27,000 kids in low income families avoid fees that can add up and make tight budgets even tighter.
The bill will cost around $1.2M per year to provide these meals statewide but would also save in potential unpaid meal debt at schools. LB966 is an investment in our kids’ future.
GOOD NEWS: Last Thursday, Sen. Megan Hunt prioritized LB966, and last Friday, the Education committee voted the bill out of committee! We are hopeful to see it up for full legislative debate soon!
There’s no better time to get food to kids who need it.
Thank you for your advocacy!
